In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ivanrf.com\/en\/asus-smart-gesture-and-windows-10\/\">previous post<\/a><\/strong> I described how to make the touchpad work after upgrading to Windows 10. However, in some cases the installer throws this error\u00a0and then makes a rollback:<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><\/div> <style>#blockquote-69d34ed9463c9 {font-family: \"Oswald\"}<\/style><div style=\"font-size: 18px;\" id=\"blockquote-69d34ed9463c9\" class=\"mk-shortcode mk-blockquote line-style \">There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Be careful with this option, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ivanrf.com\/en\/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10\/#bios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong> it is explained how to do it.<\/li>\n<li>Enter to the BIOS setup, go to the <em>Advanced<\/em> tab and enable <em>Internal Pointing Device<\/em>. Mentioned in <strong><a href=\"#comment-6397\" class=\"mk-smooth\">this comment<\/a><\/strong>, worked for X540L and X556UR.<\/li>\n<li>Install Intel Serial IO before installing the touchpad driver: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ivanrf.com\/en\/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10\/#other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel Serial IO<\/a><\/strong>. Mentioned in <strong><a href=\"#comment-6079\" class=\"mk-smooth\">this comment<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"#comment-6307\" class=\"mk-smooth\">here<\/a><\/strong>, worked for X541NA, X407M, X441UAK, VivoBook Pro, N580GD, TUF Gaming FX504, FX504GM and GL504GM.<\/li>\n<li>Update the Intel Chipset driver: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ivanrf.com\/en\/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10\/#other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel INF Update Driver<\/a><\/strong>. Worked for\u00a0F205TA,\u00a0N552VW and EeeBook X205T.<\/li>\n<li>Delete ASUS Smart Gesture with Revo Uninstaller Pro in Advanced mode. To\u00a0find the Id go to <em>Device Manager<\/em> &gt; Touchpad &gt; <em>Properties<\/em> &gt; <em>Details<\/em> tab &gt; <em>Hardware Ids<\/em>. For example, paste the Id &#8220;<em>ETD0001<\/em>&#8221; below the &#8220;<em>[VENDOR_ELAN_PS2]<\/em>&#8221; section.<\/li>\n<li>Run the installer at C:\\ASUS-unpacked\\SetupTPDriver.msi<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>By doing that, you are telling the installer that it &#8220;supports&#8221; your device. Nevertheless, two users were able to bypass the installer problem but the touchpad did not work. So, it is possible that <strong>if you are getting the error message is because your device is not supported by ASUS Smart Gesture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These are the hardware ids <strong>supported<\/strong> by the latest ASUS Smart Gesture driver:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elantech:\u00a0ETD0105, ETD0107, ETD0108, ETD0109, ETD010A, ETD010B, ETD010D, ETD010E, ETD0110, ETD0111, ETD1000, ETD0116,\u00a0ELAN0, ELAN1,\u00a0ELAN2. Also: ELAN1000, ELAN1005, ELAN0100, ELAN0101, ELAN2000.<\/li>\n<li>Synaptics:\u00a0SYN0A2D, SYN0A18. Also: SYN0A19.<\/li>\n<li>Focaltech:\u00a0FTE1,\u00a0FTE2,\u00a0FLT. Also: FTE1000, FTE1001, FTE1002, FTE2000, FLT0101, FLT0102, FLT0103.<\/li>\n<li>Wireless Dock:\u00a0VID 0B05 &amp; PID 1823,\u00a017E0,\u00a017EE,\u00a01807,\u00a08502. Also: PID 81C9.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your hardware id is not on that list, then your only option is to use one of the drivers included in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"#solutions\" class=\"mk-smooth\">solutions<\/a><\/strong> section. Download latest versions\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ivanrf.com\/en\/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10\/#atk-package\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Reset the system to factory settings as follow (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/support\/faq\/1013063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ASUS help<\/a><\/strong>). Please <strong>backup all the data<\/strong> you need firstly. (I don&#8217;t recommend this option unless you have nothing to\u00a0lose. If you follow ASUS advice make sure to backup your personal files.)\n<ol>\n<li>Restart your notebook PC then press F9 during bootup.<\/li>\n<li>Wait for Windows to load the <em>Choose an option<\/em> screen then tap <em>Troubleshoot<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tap <em>Reset your PC<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <em>Reset your PC<\/em> screen, read the bullet points to learn more about using this option then tap <em>Next<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tap your preferred reset option: <em>Fully clean the drive<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tap <em>Reset<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister\u00a0it:\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R<\/li>\n<li>In the Search box, type &#8220;msiexec \/unreg&#8221;, then press Enter<\/li>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R again<\/li>\n<li>In the Search box, type &#8220;msiexec \/regserver&#8221;, then press Enter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Perform a SFC Scan on your unit:\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + X<\/li>\n<li>Select the <em>Command Prompt (Admin)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Type the command &#8220;sfc\/scannow&#8221; and press Enter<\/li>\n<li>After the scan, restart<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When they run out of options, they suggested to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/support\/callus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">call them<\/a> or to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cms-am.asus.com\/ecp\/Rma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">apply an RMA<\/a><\/strong> (USA or Canada customers only).<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><\/div> \n\t<\/div><\/div><div id=\"root-cause\" class=\"wpb_row vc_row  vc_row-fluid  mk-fullwidth-false  attched-false vc_row-fluid\">\n\t<div style=\"\" class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column column_container \">\n\t\t\t<div style=\"padding: 20px 0 40px;\" class=\"mk-divider mk-shortcode divider_full_width center shadow_line \"><div class=\"divider-inner\"><span class=\"divider-shadow-left\"><\/span><span class=\"divider-shadow-right\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><h2 style=\"font-size: 36px;text-align:center;color: #222222;font-style:inherit;font-weight:300;padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:35px; text-transform:initial;letter-spacing:0px;\" id=\"fancy-title-69d34ed94db20\" class=\"mk-shortcode mk-fancy-title fancy-title-align-center mk-force-responsive  mk-animate-element fade-in simple-style \"><span style=\"\">Root Cause<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div>\t<div style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"mk-text-block  true\"><p>We need to know the root cause in order to find a final solution for this issue.<\/p>\n<p>A user with this installer problem contacted me and he\u00a0tried many of the previous solutions and ideas. <strong>Thanks Mark<\/strong> for the feedback and the screenshots! By the way, the workaround of using ELAN drivers worked in his case.<\/p>\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/223300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">enabled Windows Installer logging<\/a> with this Microsoft tool: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/?linkid=9723030\" rel=\"nofollow\">Enable<\/a><\/strong> | <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/?linkid=9723031\" rel=\"nofollow\">Disable<\/a><\/strong>. Then,\u00a0a\u00a0log file\u00a0is\u00a0created on the Windows temp folder <em>%temp%<\/em> when you run the installer. The\u00a0file name is like &#8220;<em>MSI___.LOG<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0There it can be analyzed what is causing the error.<\/p>\n<p>The ASUS Smart Gesture installer log contains this error:<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><\/div> <style>#blockquote-69d34ed94dd31 {font-family: \"Oswald\"}<\/style><div style=\"font-size: 16px;\" id=\"blockquote-69d34ed94dd31\" class=\"mk-shortcode mk-blockquote line-style \">Error 1722.
